Cuban Opposition Leader José Daniel Ferrer Arrested After Testifying on Human Rights Abuses

José Daniel Ferrer, one of Cuba’s most prominent opposition figures and leader of the Patriotic Union of Cuba (UNPACU), has been arrested along with family members and two humanitarian volunteers. Their whereabouts are currently unknown, raising serious concerns over arbitrary detention and enforced disappearance.

The arrest comes shortly after Ferrer’s testimony before the Human Rights Committee of the European Parliament, where he denounced systematic human rights violations by the Cuban government.
Observers view the timing of the arrest as clear retaliation against Ferrer’s international advocacy.

Over the past month, Cuban authorities have carried out more than 350 documented detentions targeting activists, journalists, and humanitarian aid workers.
Organizations such as Prisoners Defenders report that UNPACU’s humanitarian initiatives — including food distribution and basic medical services to vulnerable populations in Santiago de Cuba — have been systematically disrupted through police harassment and mass arrests.
